Most Toronto homeowners with a tub use it less than once a month.
It takes up the largest footprint in the bathroom, it collects grime in the corners, and it makes the whole room feel smaller than it is. A tub-to-shower conversion fixes all three of those problems at once. We remove the tub, reframe the space if needed, install Wedi Pro certified waterproofing on every surface, and build a custom walk-in shower that actually fits how you live. This is one of the most common renovations we do in Toronto — and one of the most satisfying, because the before and after is dramatic.
Scope of work
What's Included in a Tub to Shower Conversion
A proper conversion is not just removing the tub and tiling over the existing base. Here is everything we do to make it last.
Book a Free ConsultationWe remove the tub, the surround, and everything underneath it down to the subfloor and studs. In older Toronto homes this often reveals the absence of any waterproofing behind the original surround — which is exactly why we start fresh rather than build on top of what was there.
Before any tile goes up, every wet surface gets certified Wedi Pro waterproofing: walls, shower floor, and the curb or curbless threshold. The shower pan is sloped and waterproofed properly so water drains where it is supposed to — not into the subfloor.
Floor and wall tile installation, built-in shower niche, frameless or semi-frameless glass enclosure, rain head or standard shower head, hand shower, thermostatic valve, and all hardware. We build the shower to your specification — curbless, semi-curbless, or standard.
The existing tub drain is converted or relocated for the new shower configuration. All supply and drain connections are made to code. If the shower position changes significantly from the tub position, we assess the plumbing implications honestly during the consultation before quoting.
Why Pilkowski
The Difference Is in the Details
A lot of contractors will remove the tub and tile directly over the existing alcove without proper waterproofing. It looks fine for a year or two. Then it leaks — into the subfloor, the ceiling below, or the wall cavity. A conversion done right looks the same but lasts decades longer.

The process
From First Call to Final Walkthrough
Four stages. No handoffs, no surprises — Chris Pilkowski is on-site at every one of them.
We come to you. We walk the space, take measurements, and have a real conversation about what you want out of your bathroom — how you use it today, what frustrates you about it, and what you want it to feel like. Then we put a plan together.
- Full written scope of work
- Line-by-line itemized quote, no vague numbers
- Honest assessment of your plumbing and electrical
- No pressure, no obligation
Before a single wall comes down, you see exactly what your new bathroom will look like. We render the full space in 3D: tile layout, shower design, fixtures, glass, lighting. If something needs adjusting, we adjust it now — not mid-build when it costs real money.
- Full 3D render of your new bathroom
- Tile, fixture, and finish selection guidance
- Included free with every renovation booked this month
- Changes are easy here — not after demo
Demolition, then Wedi Pro waterproofing before a single tile goes up. Then tile, glass, fixtures, plumbing, and electrical — in the right sequence, on the schedule we committed to, with the same crew from start to finish. You know who is in your home every day.
- Wedi Pro certified waterproofing on every wet surface
- Same crew throughout — no random subcontractors
- Progress updates when you want them
- Worksite cleaned at the end of every day
We walk the finished bathroom together. Every tile, every fixture, every detail — you check it all. We are not done until you are satisfied. Then we hand you the warranty documents that protect your investment long after we leave.
- 10-year waterproofing warranty in writing
- 5-year workmanship warranty in writing
- Full site cleanup on completion

What to Consider When Converting Your Tub
The decisions you make during the conversion have a big impact on how the finished shower looks and functions. Here is what most of our Toronto clients choose.
A curbless shower has no threshold to step over. It looks cleaner, is more accessible, and makes the bathroom feel larger. It requires a properly sloped floor — which we waterproof and build correctly.
Frameless glass is the most popular choice. Minimal hardware, full visibility of the tile work, and a clean look that holds up far better than framed or semi-framed alternatives over time.
In a converted tub alcove, large-format tile with minimal grout lines makes the space feel intentional rather than retrofitted. 12x24" or larger on the walls, 12x12" or larger on the floor.
A recessed tile niche built into the shower wall eliminates the need for caddies or shelves. We build it during the waterproofing stage so it is properly integrated — not cut in after the fact.
A ceiling-mounted or wall-mounted rain head paired with a hand shower and thermostatic valve gives you precise temperature control and a significantly better shower experience daily.
Electric radiant heating under the shower and bathroom floor tile. A worthwhile upgrade when you are already doing the tile work — the additional cost is modest and the comfort difference is significant.

A custom curbless shower with large-format tile, frameless glass, and a built-in niche runs $15,000–$20,000. Plumbing relocation adds $2,000–$6,000 if required. See our full cost guide for more detail.
A straightforward tub to shower conversion takes 1–2 weeks. A more complex build with plumbing relocation or an expanded shower footprint takes 2–3 weeks. We give you a realistic timeline before we start.
If you have another tub in the home, removing the unused one and converting to a walk-in shower is almost always the right decision. You will use the shower every day. The tub sits there. If this is your only bathroom, we walk through the tradeoffs honestly during your free consultation — sometimes a freestanding tub alongside a separate shower is feasible if space allows.
Generally no — as long as at least one bathtub remains in the home. A well-built walk-in shower replacing an unused tub is viewed as a practical upgrade by most buyers. The concern only arises when no tub exists anywhere in the home, which can affect buyers with young children. We discuss this honestly during your consultation.
