An accessible bathroom does not have to look like a hospital room.
Most people think of accessible renovations as clinical and institutional. They do not have to be. A curbless shower, properly placed grab bars in a matching finish, non-slip large-format tile, and a floating vanity at the right height can all be part of a bathroom you would choose regardless of the accessibility requirement. We hold Adaptiv Home and BuildABILITY certifications and have renovated bathrooms for aging-in-place clients, post-surgery recoveries, and families planning ahead. We take the time to understand exactly how the bathroom will be used and build it around that — not around a checklist.
Scope of work
What's Included in an Accessible Bathroom Renovation
We approach each project by understanding how the bathroom will be used day to day. Everything we specify and install serves a real functional purpose — nothing generic, nothing just for show.
Book a Free ConsultationGrab bars installed into wall studs or properly installed structural backing rated to 250 lbs minimum — never into drywall only. We install bars at the toilet, shower entry, and shower walls based on how the user moves through the space. Finish matched to your fixtures.
A barrier-free curbless shower with a properly sloped floor, certified Wedi Pro waterproofing, fold-down shower seat, grab bars at the entry and inside walls, handheld shower head, and a thermostatic valve for safe temperature control. Built to last with our 10-year written warranty.
Doorway widening to 32–36 inches minimum for wheelchair or walker access. Non-slip large-format tile selected and installed to minimize grout lines and tripping hazards. Turning radius assessed and accommodated where possible within the existing footprint.
Comfort-height toilet installation at 17–19 inches. Floating vanity set at an accessible height with knee clearance. Lever or sensor faucet controls. Rocker light switches at a lowered height if required. All modifications assessed and planned during the free consultation.
Why Pilkowski
The Difference Is in the Details
Accessible renovations done poorly are dangerous. Grab bars that pull out of the wall under load, a curbless shower floor with inadequate slope that pools water, a doorway widened without proper framing — these are not just cosmetic failures. We hold the certifications and do the work correctly.

The process
From First Call to Final Walkthrough
Four stages. No handoffs, no surprises — Chris Pilkowski is on-site at every one of them.
We come to you. We walk the space, take measurements, and have a real conversation about what you want out of your bathroom — how you use it today, what frustrates you about it, and what you want it to feel like. Then we put a plan together.
- Full written scope of work
- Line-by-line itemized quote, no vague numbers
- Honest assessment of your plumbing and electrical
- No pressure, no obligation
Before a single wall comes down, you see exactly what your new bathroom will look like. We render the full space in 3D: tile layout, shower design, fixtures, glass, lighting. If something needs adjusting, we adjust it now — not mid-build when it costs real money.
- Full 3D render of your new bathroom
- Tile, fixture, and finish selection guidance
- Included free with every renovation booked this month
- Changes are easy here — not after demo
Demolition, then Wedi Pro waterproofing before a single tile goes up. Then tile, glass, fixtures, plumbing, and electrical — in the right sequence, on the schedule we committed to, with the same crew from start to finish. You know who is in your home every day.
- Wedi Pro certified waterproofing on every wet surface
- Same crew throughout — no random subcontractors
- Progress updates when you want them
- Worksite cleaned at the end of every day
We walk the finished bathroom together. Every tile, every fixture, every detail — you check it all. We are not done until you are satisfied. Then we hand you the warranty documents that protect your investment long after we leave.

What we install
Accessibility Features That Work and Look Good
Every feature below serves a real functional purpose. None of them have to look clinical — matched to your tile and hardware, they look like they were always part of the design.
Installed into structural backing rated to 250 lbs minimum — never drywall only. Positioned based on actual movement patterns in the shower and at the toilet. Available in brushed nickel, matte black, chrome, or to match your fixtures.
No threshold, properly sloped floor, and certified waterproofing. Wide enough for a shower wheelchair or walker. A curbless shower is the single most impactful change in an accessible bathroom renovation.
A wall-mounted fold-down seat stays out of the way when not needed. Installed into structural backing, rated to support full body weight. Tiled surround or finished to match the bathroom.
Porcelain tile with a slip-resistance rating appropriate for wet areas. Large format reduces grout lines and tripping hazards. The same tile used in high-end bathroom renovations — chosen for safety as well as appearance.
Widened to 32–36 inches minimum for walker or wheelchair access. Properly reframed, finished, and trimmed. We assess the wall structure during consultation and give you an honest scope before quoting.
A handheld shower on a slide bar for seated or assisted showering. Thermostatic valve maintains a safe, consistent water temperature regardless of pressure changes elsewhere in the home.

Chris took the time to explain what needed to be done to make our washroom layout actually work for us. He understood our situation completely and every finish was perfect to the last detail. We could not be happier.
The attention to detail was incredible and I felt like I knew where every penny I spent was going. Every part of the renovation was documented and I was always kept in the loop throughout the whole project.
Chris and his team were very professional and extremely detail oriented. Most importantly, they were very transparent in their billing and cost breakdowns from start to finish.
Common questions
Frequently Asked Questions
Targeted modifications — grab bars, a fold-down seat, non-slip flooring — run $5,000–$12,000. A curbless shower conversion runs $15,000–$25,000. A full barrier-free gut renovation with widened doorway and accessible fixtures throughout runs $30,000–$50,000. We assess what is genuinely needed during your free consultation and give you an honest quote.
We hold Adaptiv Home and BuildABILITY certifications for accessible and aging-in-place renovations. These cover universal design principles, barrier-free construction standards, and correct installation of grab bars, curbless showers, and wider doorways. These are the same certifications required by occupational therapists and care coordinators when specifying accessible home modifications.
Yes — when installed correctly into wall studs or proper structural backing. A grab bar installed only into drywall will fail under load, which is exactly the risk with a contractor who does not understand the installation requirements. We install all grab bars into structural backing rated to 250 lbs minimum per Canadian building code requirements for accessibility features.
Yes — and this is something we focus on specifically. Accessibility features do not have to look clinical. A curbless shower, a well-placed grab bar in a matching finish, non-slip large-format tile, and a floating vanity at the right height all work together in a bathroom that looks premium and functions safely. We design accessible bathrooms that you would choose regardless of the accessibility requirement.
