Historic Home Ensuite – Structural Reconfiguration & Curbless Shower
Project Overview
This project involved the complete structural reconfiguration of a compact bathroom within a historic Toronto home. The primary objective was to integrate a modern, barrier-free curbless shower into a space that originally lacked the square footage and structural depth to support it. The result is a seamless blend of heritage charm and modern accessibility.
Structural Framing & Layout
To solve the spatial constraints, we performed significant structural alterations. An existing non-load-bearing partition wall was demolished and relocated to expand the footprint of the room. This allowed us to optimize the layout, providing sufficient clearance for the new fixtures without compromising the home’s historic character.
Technical Curbless Execution
Achieving a zero-threshold entry on an aged timber frame required precise subfloor preparation. We utilized a specialized recessed subfloor system combined with a Wedi waterproof assembly. This allowed us to install a flush linear drain and ramp the large-format porcelain slabs seamlessly, ensuring rapid drainage and a 100% sealed envelope.
Premium Finishes & Tile Work
The aesthetic focus was on creating a sense of volume in a small room. We installed large-format, marble-look porcelain tiles with minimal grout lines (using stain-resistant Epoxy grout). A custom recessed niche was integrated into the new framing, and a wall-hung vanity was selected to maximize visible floor area. Structural & Finish Preparation
As part of the renovation, wall assemblies were properly addressed and rebuilt where required to ensure a solid base for all new finishes. This preparation supports the longevity, performance, and overall quality of the renovation.
Project Outcome
This renovation demonstrates that limited square footage is no barrier to luxury. By combining structural ingenuity with high-end waterproofing systems, we delivered a spacious, barrier-free bathroom that meets modern design standards while respecting the home's architecture.
